HIMACHAL
PRADESH HIMALAYAN TREKS.....

The
earliest known inhabitants of the region were tribals called Dasas. Later,
Aryans came and they assimilated in the tribes. In the later centuries, the
hill chieftains accepted suzerainty of the Mauryan empire, the Kaushans, the
Guptas and Kanuaj rulers. During the Mughal period, the Rajas of the hill
states made some mutually agreed arrangements which governed their
relations. In the 19th century, Ranjit Singh annexed/subjugated many of the
states. When the British came, they defeated Gorkhas and entered into
treaties with some Rajas and annexed the kingdoms of others. The situation
more or less remained unchanged till 1947. After Independence, 30 princely
states of the area were united and Himachal Pradesh was formed on 15th
April, 1948. With the recognition of Punjab on 1st November, 1966, certain
areas belonging to it were also included in Himachal Pradesh. On 25th
January, 1971, Himachal Pradesh was made a full-fledged State. The State is
bordered by Jammu & Kashmir on North, Punjab on West and South-West,
Haryana on South, Uttar Pradesh on South-East and China on the East.
About 2 million years ago man lived in the
foothills of Himachal Pradesh, viz in the Bangana valley of Kangra, Sirsa
valley of Nalagarh and Markanda valley of Sirmour. The foothills of the
state were inhabited by people from Indus valley civilization which
flourished between 2250 and 1750 B.C. People of Indus valley civilization
pushed the original inhabitants of Ganga plains who were known as Kolorian
people towards north. They moved to the hills of Himachal Pradesh where they
could live peacefully and preserve their way of life.
In the Vedas
they have been referred to as Dasas, Dasyus and Nishadas while in later
works they have been called Kinnars, Nagas and Yakshas. The Kols or Mundas
are believed to be the original migrants to the hills of present day
Himachal.
The second phase of migrants came in the form of
Mongoloid people known as Bhotas and Kiratas. Later on came the third and
most important wave of migrants in the form of the Aryans who left their
Central Asian home. These laid the base of history and culture of Himachal
Pradesh.

village . Shedagoru means cold place. Cross to the hamta pass 4300mts, and
from the top one can see some of peaks of deotibba & indrasan. Once over
the pass, the path is a little difficult for walking and horses really have
a tough time as the path descends very steeply. Camping site is visible from
the last part of the descent, it is a huge green meadow among the dark stark
mountains of lahaul valley. Afternoon at leisure to walk around the camp.
Over night camp
Day 05: shedagoru to chhatru (3100 m ):-

in the morning. On the other side of the river the path descends in the
zigzag form till one reaches the mighty chander river. Cross same over the
wooden bridge. From the bridge, chhatru is only 03 km away. Here we meet the
road which runs from manali to kaza. The district headquarters of the spiti
valley. On arrival camp is set. Overnight at camp.

rock climbing people. The colours of these rocks are black, red, greenish,
brownish. Some small tea shops mark the arrival at chotta dara. Camp is set
near tea shops. Overnight at camp.
Day 07: chotta dara to
batal:- ( 4,000 m) batal is 17 km from chotta dara . Same walk like the
previous day on the dirt road. Along the walk, the beautiful mountain peaks
are seen over the horizon. Batal is a very windy and dusty place. On arrival
camp is set for overnight.
Day 08: batal to chandertal(moon
lake):- ( 4,338 m) the trek starts on the left bank of the chandra
river. After couple of hours of gentle walking, a large meadow is approached
, a favourite grazing area with a multitude of shepherd huts . These
seppherds come from the kangra valley and it takes months of travelling with
their flocks to get there. Two ravines are then crossed followed by a long
streatch of stony ground , crossing a tiny stream , up a grassy slope and on
to chandaratal moonlake , where camp is set. And nice camping near the lake
..
Day 09: moonlake to tokpo yongmo:- (4,450 m) this
stretch of about 14 to 16 km is best done in two stages . The route starts
with a series of ups and downs through steep raven and boulder -stream
fields . As you progress further , you come on grassy flat land which slopes
up to snow clad ridge . Snow cocks can be heard and even sighted . After
about three hours ,the trail winds down a knoll which has a steep precipice
to the river far down to the left. You now pass through glacier debris. A
stretch of about two hours, rough walking , before reaching the campsite
late after noon .
Day 10: tokpo yongmo to tokpo
kongmo (4,650m start early this morning , since this stream has to be
crossed while the flow of water is less earlier in the day . At about 4,600
m the water is icy cold and getting all the horses across will take over an
hour . A short walk along the chandra , before the path opens out on a broad
plateau where camp is set on a delightful grassy plain with a tiny stream
flowing through it. The campside provides a glorious panoramic view of snow
covered peaks
.
Day 11: tokpo kongmo to baralacha-la
(4,891m) the walk starts with the crossing of the tokpo kongmo . A steep
descent is made down the plateau along a precipitous path to the rave , 150
m below the camping ground. The stream crossing is possible only in autumn,
when the level of water is quite low. The option is to climb steeply up the
mountain side to a snow bridge high up on the kongma. The path up from now
on is easier, crossing along grassy stretches, alternated with stony patches
. The gentle gradient slowly reaches the top of the pass , which is barely
noticeable since the pass itself is a trail mountain with the main himalayan
range . On the pass, join the main high way to leh , vehicles will be
waiting. Camp is set here for the night .
