Day 2Hiking to Cardamon Plantations and Rainforest

After breakfast, you will be taken to a small plantation town in the foothills of the Chembra ranges. You will drive beyond the town on the smooth road winding through teagardens to the trailhead.

The hike launches you into a tea garden clinging to the gentle slopes of the foothills with a massive summit high above. After a steady gradual climb (2hrs), and passing plantation settlements, you will finally reach the shade of the forest canopy – the cardamom forests retain the massive old trees, and the canopy is intact.

You will climb hard out of the treeline into grasslands to a vista point.

Have lunch enjoying the view before starting the descent. The descent will get you to the trail head by late evening, and you will return to the resort by sundown for a well-earned rest. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 3Wayanad – Cycling

After breakfast, you will go on a cycling trip through tea country (Distance: 40kms).

During the ride you can choose to stop at a couple of points of interest - a bamboo handicrafts factory and an NGO that supports hundreds of local women. The smooth tarmac will suddenly plunge down to backcountry roads and then land you into a mud trail cutting through paddy fields. The physical challenge of negotiating this section will be compensated by the view when you start following the shoreline of the shimmering lake. You will take a break at the dam and take in the view of the distant rampart of mountains. The ride will continue through patches of mud trail, backcountry roads and smooth tarmac to finally return to the homestay. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 4Wayanad – Plantation walk + Cooking demonstration + Bamboo rafting

Early morning, you will go on a plantation walk.

Edom is a 150-acre coffee and spice plantation. You will have the opportunity to see a variety of spices such as cardamom, pepper, nutmeg, vanilla and walk through rice fields and banana plantations. The walk will last a couple of hours and you will be accompanied by a guide who will explain what you are seeing. The walk will last about 1.5 hours.

Later return to hotel for breakfast. Post breakfast, the hosts will conduct a Cooking demonstration of traditional Keralan cuisine. Guests will be introduced to various spices and vegetables that are traditionally used and will be guided in how they should be used.

Lunch will be a sumptuous spread of traditional Kerala vegetarian dishes served on banana leaves.

After some rest, towards early evening, walk down to a zipline nearby.

Later you will visit a local river for some bamboo rafting. Life jackets are mandatory and a local raftsman will accompany you. Bamboo rafting is a gentle enjoyable experience that gives you an opportunity to see the river life at close quarters.

Later return to the hotel for overnight stay.

Day 5 Wayanad – Light Jungle Hiking + River Crossing

After breakfast, you will head to the Kuruva islands (1.5hrs).

On your way there, you will stop at the home of a local farmer who specializes in growing endemic strains of rice. From here, you will carry onto a pottery session where you can try your hand at the wheel. Nearby is a basket weaver – locally grown bamboo is woven by the local community into lovely objects of daily use.

You will then walk down through the rural communities and paddy fields where your guide will explain the local way of life. The walk continues through the nearby jungle where you will get an overview of the wide variety of flora and fauna that abound here. You will also visit an ancient tribal temple hidden in a little clearing deep in the woods. These temples are sacred to the Thirumugham, Elliampath, Cheriyamala and Kandamala communities who maintain these temples.

You will then wander down into the paddy fields that adjoin the Kuruva islands – many of these are tended by local tribal communities, who cultivate a very rare, delicate strain of rice, called "gandhakashala". This endemic strain of rice is famed for its fragrance, but unfortunately, is becoming increasingly hard to find.

You will have a packed lunch en-route.

This walk is a great introduction to rural Wayanad, and an opportunity to meet some of the region’s oldest inhabitants.

In the evening, drive back to the resort (1.5hrs). Overnight at the hotel.

Day 6Wayanad

After breakfast, you will visit a nearby tea museum for an in-depth introduction to how tea is grown and processed.
